Peacekeeping: A Global Strategy for Peace and Security

Peacekeeping: A Global Strategy for Peace and Security

Breaking Down Walls and Building Bridges

Looking out the window of my humble Birmingham abode, I watch Luna my terrier romp in a patch of sunlight, fully at peace, oblivious to the turmoil the world sometimes finds itself in. It's a serenity I wish upon every living being. Although I'm not a seasoned diplomat or a war correspondent, I fully believe that we can all play a part in ushering in global peace. But how is the big question. Let's break it down and try to see how we can achieve it.

The Heart of a Peacemaker

A while ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a peace activist and had the longest, most rewarding conversation. We got into discussions about the chaotic state of global affairs and he told me something very profound. In his words, "You don’t have to be a politician or a soldier to be a peacemaker. Every living person bears this capacity". Those words forever etched a mark on my heart.

We all hold the power to advocate for peace, no matter our profession or circumstances. It’s all about having a heart full of compassion and an open mind, understanding that every individual is unique, yet fundamentally the same. We are all human and desire the same fundamental things: love, understanding, and peace. His words remind me that one of the vital steps towards global peace is practicing empathy.

Education: The Pillar of Peace

Remember your school days? I do - not always fondly, granted, but they're certainly educational in more ways than one. My science teacher once said, “Education sparks curiosity, and curiosity leads to understanding". In the cogs of peacekeeping, education is the engine oil. Whether it's the formal classroom kind or the life lesson types that we learn in the school of hard knocks is up to interpretation.

The beauty of learning and understanding is that it bridges the gap between ignorance and empathy, combating harmful biases and prejudices. It promotes understanding between different cultures and nationalities, breaking down walls that divide us. Do you remember the story of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who stood against the Taliban for girls' education? A single drop in the ocean of peace, with an enormous ripple effect across the world.

Peace Through Sustainable Development

Moving on from my jigsaw puzzle project (that's going nowhere) to other holistic pursuits, I've found that sustainable development is the crux of all things good, including peace and security. This was another lesson courtesy of the activist. "True peace,” he said, “can be achieved when every member of society shares fairly from the world's resources, creating harmony between us and the planet we rely on.”

You see, economic inequality, poverty, and environmental degradation weaken social stability. It fuels conflict, often resulting in violence. When we invest in sustainable development, we aren’t just saving the environment, we are promoting social equality and, in turn, fostering peace.

Art and Culture: The Peacemaker's Colour Palette

It was at a local arts and culture festival that a young man approached me. His badge identified him as a part of an international art exchange program. He excitedly explained how art and culture are tools for social change and peacebuilding, making an indelible impact on how I see. That was when I realized my quirk for finding art exhibitions and cultural festivals whenever I travel wasn't just for the 'gram.

Art communicates across languages, borders, and social classes. It's the global language that breathes life into the tapestry of human existence, linking us in a way that politics and diplomacy often can't. Whether it's a melody humming across oceans, a painting that echoes emotions, or the universal language of food (my favourite!), they all infuse us with commonality, making us forget our divisions and remember our shared humanity.

The Power of Dialogue: An Underestimated Tool

Just between us and Luna, I used to be averse to confrontations. Small disagreements would make me want to crawl under a rock. Until I learnt the power of dialogue, that is. Just like the way Luna and I have those heart-to-hearts (yes, I speak dog)! The idea of dialogue as a conflict resolution tool is both charming and logical. It transforms my Duke of Bedford-inspired drawing room into a 'negotiation table', changing the dynamics of familial and societal conflicts.

The power of words should never be underestimated. Constructive dialogue can help soften the hardest of hearts, and has the potential to resolve the deepest conflicts. Dialogues promote understanding, easing miscommunication and fostering bonds between individuals, groups, and even nations. In the grand scheme of world peace, dialogue is a non-violent strategy which promotes harmony and unity.

A world drenched in peace and security might be a fairytale for many, but with actionable steps like empathy, education, sustainable development, art, and dialogue, I believe it's quite achievable. And if every one of us becomes a peacemaker in our small ways, we're contributing to this grand cause, creating ripples that can range far and wide. And just like Luna, we can all experience peace in our little patches of the world, hoping and working so one day everyone else will too.
